The 2011 U.S. News college rankings were finally released. The 2011 U.S. News college rankings also have some familiar college rankings near the top of the list, and it should probably come as no surprise that the battle is between Harvard, Princeton, and Yale once again. Leading the way on the 2011 U.S. News college rankings is Harvard University, which received a perfect score of 100 when it came to putting the list together. They are the only school to receive a perfect score, putting them at the top of the overall list. To put that score in perspective, there were only 11 other schools on the list that even had a score of 90 or better, so it shows how difficult it is to receive a perfect score of 100 out of 100 from the U.S. News and World Report. Coming in second on the 2011 U.S. News college rankings list was Princeton University, taking home a score of 99 out of 100, and they are followed by Yale University at No. 3 with a score of 98. None of the top three universities is very inexpensive when it comes to tuition prices, and according to the U.S. News and World Report, all three of them have tuition and fees that surpass $36,000 for the 2010-11 school year. They also have a very low acceptance rate, with Harvard at 7%, Princeton at 10%, and Yale at just 8%. The highest percentage of acceptance among the school ranked in the top 25 was No. 23 ranked Carnegie Mellon University, which accepts 36% of those that apply to attend. Their tuition is much more expensive though, reportedly reaching almost $42,000 for the 2010-11 school year. According to US News, there is an extensive process that goes into ranking all of the colleges around the country. Included in that is retention of professors, graduation rates, and the strength of the faculty. They also work to take into account the location, campus life, academic offerings, activities, the cost, and of course the availability of financial aid to students. It is a very in-depth look that takes into account more than just the prestige of a school, and these rankings go a long way towards presenting an unbiased look at all the schools in one list. There are of course those that find holes in these rankings, but the U.S. News college rankings are often considered the gold standard, and everyone looks to them whether they approve of the ranking system or not. 2011 U.S. News College Rankings 1.
